If you are divorced abroad but Turkish records still show a marriage, first assess the administrative registration route and whether judicial recognition or enforcement is needed for other parts of the decision.
Civil status is one objective
A qualifying foreign divorce may be entered in the civil register under Article 27/A of Law No. 5490. The application conditions, finality, authenticity and relevant exceptions must be checked. Do not assume that every case requires a new divorce lawsuit or that every foreign document qualifies for administrative registration.
Financial and child-related terms need separate review
Updating marital status does not necessarily enforce support, compensation, property or custody provisions. A final divorce order may need different documentation from a conditional or provisional decision. Explain where each former spouse lives, whether an application can be coordinated and what effect you need in Turkey. An apostille and translation support the document chain but do not themselves grant recognition.
Select the Turkish effect you actually need
Updating marital status, obtaining recognition of a judgment and enforcing a monetary obligation are not the same outcome. A civil-registration route may be available for qualifying foreign decisions under Article 27/A, while other circumstances require judicial assessment. Identify the decision and requested effect before treating every file as a new Turkish divorce.
Build a complete judgment set
A brief status extract may omit the decision’s terms. Assemble the complete decision, evidence of finality and any relevant service material. Explain whether there are separate financial or child-related orders and whether only one part is final. Authentication, translation and the accepting authority’s requirements should be checked for each instrument.
Plan the step after registration or judgment
A change in the population record does not by itself collect unpaid maintenance or resolve a separate property dispute. Identify the institution that must act after the first result. Check name differences and earlier civil events before preparing final translations, since an identity mismatch may interrupt the later registration.
