Determine the declaration obligation separately
Receiving an inheritance and filing its tax declaration are different tasks. Turkish assets may raise inheritance and transfer tax obligations even when heirs live overseas. Nationality, asset location and the statutory rules matter. An exemption affecting tax payable does not automatically remove the declaration requirement for inherited assets. Use the Revenue Administration’s current guidance rather than a rate table from an earlier year.
Establish the deadline from the death and heir locations
The statutory filing periods differ depending on where death occurred and where the taxpayer is located. Record those facts before calculating a date. Death in Turkey with an heir abroad is not the same scenario as death abroad with the heir in another country. An appointment for an inheritance certificate does not itself postpone a tax deadline. Ask which filings can proceed while remaining documents are completed.
Prepare values, liabilities and authority
An estate file may need the heirship document, death and address information, asset records and evidence of deductible debt or expenses. Registry value, bank balance and company interests are not interchangeable valuation items. A representative requires appropriate authority; co-heirs should agree who prepares and signs the declaration. Retain submission and assessment records and coordinate any obligations in the heir’s country of residence with qualified local advice.
Questions about this procedure
If my share is exempt, can I skip the declaration?
Do not assume so. Revenue Administration guidance distinguishes inherited transfers from other gratuitous transfers; filing can remain required below an inheritance exemption.

The place of death and the heir’s location affect the inheritance-tax return timetable. The Revenue Administration describes four months where death and the taxpayer are in Turkey, and six months where death is in Turkey but the taxpayer is abroad. For a death abroad, it describes six months where the taxpayer is in Turkey, four months where the taxpayer is in the country of death, and eight months where the taxpayer is in a different foreign country. Establish the real locations and dates before applying a period. A foreign probate procedure does not automatically reset the Turkish filing timetable.
Identify taxable scope before using a rate
A Turkish inheritance-tax calculation is not produced simply by multiplying the total estate by a flat percentage. Nationality, residence, location and kind of asset, exclusions, exemptions and the applicable annual tariff must be examined. Turkish property and a foreign asset can have different tax consequences. Obtain the current official tariff and exemption amounts for the relevant year rather than reuse a figure from a previous case. This guide deliberately does not give an unverified numeric estimate. Foreign tax obligations and relief must be checked separately with the adviser or authority in the relevant country.
Organise the assets and supporting records
Prepare the heirship evidence, death record, identity details, relevant asset documents and information needed for valuation. A property, a bank balance, a company share and a disputed receivable may require different evidence. Record the values and dates used and distinguish confirmed assets from unresolved searches. Do not assume the certificate of heirs is itself a valuation or inventory. Where a foreign record is relied on, check authentication and translation requirements with the receiving authority. Missing information should be identified early so that filing, correction and any further document work can be planned.
Coordinate filing with bank and title work
Filing the return, paying assessed tax, transferring a bank balance and registering land are linked but separate steps. A filed tax declaration is not by itself proof that the bank must immediately release every account. Ask which evidence the particular institution needs and whether a payment or clearance issue remains. A future sale of inherited land can also create questions different from the inheritance declaration. The lawyer’s mandate and cost quotation should identify whether tax-document coordination is included or handled with another professional. Keep submission receipts and later correspondence so a filing deadline is not confused with a later payment date.
Example for an heir abroad
A deceased person dies in Turkey and an heir remains resident abroad. The official guidance describes a six-month return period for that location combination. The heir should still verify the actual facts, taxable scope, asset values and authority to submit. Waiting for an unrelated foreign administration to finish can leave the Turkish work late. If more assets are found afterwards, ask how the declaration should be updated under the applicable rules. Do not treat discovery of another account as if no earlier filing obligation existed.
Are filing and payment deadlines the same?
No. The return timetable and the subsequent assessed payment schedule must be checked separately.
Does being a foreign heir always eliminate Turkish tax?
No automatic exemption follows from that description. Nationality, residence, asset location and the statutory scope must be assessed.
Can the amount be estimated without an asset inventory?
A reliable estimate needs the taxable scope, supported values and the applicable annual tariff and exemptions.
