Lawyer Licence in Turkey: Check Bar Registration

How to verify a Turkish lawyer’s professional identity, registration and mandate before a consultation or court representation.

The professional title and the intended work

In Turkey the regulated professional title is avukat. Labels such as legal consultant, document agent, solicitor or adviser are not interchangeable evidence of authority to practise Turkish law. Ask for the individual’s full professional name, the relevant bar and registration number, and identify who will sign the engagement and handle the file. A company name or a website’s language does not establish the individual representative’s status. Verification concerns the person actually instructed, not just the brand appearing on an advertisement.

Use the official bar directory

The Union of Turkish Bar Associations provides a public lawyer-search directory with name, surname, bar and registration fields. Use the most precise identifiers available and check that the result concerns the person you intend to retain. A common name alone can be ambiguous; different spelling can also affect results. If the record cannot be resolved, contact the relevant bar rather than conclude from a search-engine snippet. The directory and bar can clarify registration questions; this website does not issue a professional certificate or maintain a substitute national register.

Registration is different from suitability

A professional record is an identity and regulatory check. It does not establish that an individual has reviewed your evidence, has no conflict or will obtain a particular outcome. Explain your issue before assuming that a lawyer is available for the specific work. A lawyer may need to identify the parties and the existing dispute before accepting an instruction. Ask which tasks the lawyer will undertake personally and how other professionals, such as translators or accountants, will participate. Court representation, notarial work and tax assistance should be described accurately.

Qualification in another country

A foreign professional qualification does not automatically give its holder the same rights as a lawyer admitted to a Turkish bar. Likewise, Turkish registration does not create automatic rights to conduct litigation in another jurisdiction. International work can require coordination between properly authorised advisers in both countries. Confirm which country’s law the engagement covers. A Turkish document-review assignment can be useful to foreign counsel without turning the Turkish lawyer into the representative for the foreign proceedings.

Verify the mandate separately

Once identity and scope are established, the authority needed for the actual procedure must be checked. A consultation can precede a power of attorney, but representing a client before institutions requires the appropriate mandate. The wording, special powers and notarial form depend on the act. An emailed scan can help prepare the file while the receiving authority may still require another form or an original. Review the draft before arranging an appointment and clarify who will handle authentication and translation.

Record the fee and communication arrangements

A written agreement should identify the professional, client, subject, included stages and fee assumptions. Distinguish professional fees from official charges, translations and experts. Clarify who provides progress reports and how instructions are recorded. A retainer for an initial review does not automatically include an appeal or a separate title-transfer procedure. If a fee receipt or payment instruction uses a different legal name, request an explanation connecting it to the engagement. These practical questions support an understandable mandate rather than predicting the outcome of the legal dispute.

Using this website’s contact details

The professional contact supplied for Turkey Legal is Av. Murat Adar, Istanbul Bar registration number 21499, with an office in Bağcılar, Istanbul. These details identify the intended professional contact; the current authoritative registration record should be checked with the bar directory. The website does not claim affiliation with other lawyers or firms that may appear in search queries. If you are looking for a specifically named professional, use their exact name and official registration rather than assuming that an unrelated search result identifies them.

Questions about this procedure

Can a website certify that a lawyer is currently registered?

The authoritative check is through the official directory and relevant bar. A website profile is supporting identification, not a substitute registry.

Does Turkish registration prove fluency in my language?

No. Agree the working language and whether interpretation is required.

Is a power of attorney proof of professional admission?

It gives authority for specified acts; it is not itself the lawyer’s professional registration.

What if I searched for another named lawyer?

Use that person’s exact identifiers in the official directory. Turkey Legal does not claim to represent or be affiliated with other professionals.
