ENGLISH INFORMATION CENTRE • ISTANBUL
Clear English guidance for foreign spouses, Turkish citizens living abroad, mixed-nationality families and people who already hold a foreign divorce judgment.
ADAR HUKUK
Move from a general question to a workable plan: prepare your consultation, write an international settlement and identify the property issues that need their own claim. These guides address Turkish proceedings; a foreign court or authority may require a separate local assessment.
How to organise dates, priorities, existing proceedings and questions before discussing an international divorce.

Continue readingFor clients in the UK, the United States and other English-speaking countries, familiar labels can conceal different legal effects. A final divorce order, a financial order and a parenting arrangement should be identified separately. The place of marriage alone does not decide jurisdiction or the applicable law. Planning begins with the result required in Türkiye and the result required abroad.
START WITH YOUR PRESENT POSITION
The phrase “international divorce” can describe very different problems: a new case, a foreign judgment, an overseas respondent, a child retained in another country or a Turkish asset that a foreign order cannot directly transfer. The correct route depends on which problem exists now.
SITUATION-BASED ROUTES
Check jurisdiction, applicable law and the correct procedure before choosing the country of filing.
Start with divorce in Türkiye →Separate civil-status registration from court recognition and enforcement of financial orders.
Check the recognition route →Identify the final order or decree absolute and build the correct UK-to-Türkiye document chain.

Each route below leads to a focused, source-based guide. Related issues remain connected without forcing one page to answer every search intent.
Choose the correct ground, procedure, evidence plan and timeline before filing or responding.
Separate custody, contact, financial support, relocation and immediate protection into workable orders.
Map assets, debts, agreements and enforceable payments across countries and legal systems.
Plan finality, service, authentication, translation, representation and the legal effect required in Türkiye.
CROSS-BORDER CASE MAP
A strong international case plan records one answer in every row. Leaving a row blank can produce a judgment that arrives late, cannot be enforced or does not solve the issue that brought the family to court.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Potentially, yes. The Turkish court must have international jurisdiction, and the correct venue and applicable law must be identified from the spouses’ nationalities, domicile, habitual residence and other connections.
A lawyer may handle many procedural steps under a properly drafted power of attorney, but personal participation can still be required. In an uncontested divorce, the judge must hear both spouses personally.
Not in every case. A qualifying decision may use the administrative registration route; otherwise judicial recognition may be required. Executable financial terms can require enforcement as well.
No. An apostille authenticates the origin of a covered public document. It does not translate the judgment, prove every required aspect of finality or itself grant recognition or enforcement.
No. The child’s interests and the relevant jurisdictional framework are central. In a Hague return case, habitual residence and the circumstances immediately before removal or retention are particularly important.
