Start with the final judgment
Collect the full judgment, information about finality and any enforcement document. Offence date, offence type, sentence and earlier convictions may affect the applicable regime. The lawyer must establish the relevant legal basis before giving an individual calculation. A headline sentence figure alone does not establish a release date.
Credit for earlier restrictions
Earlier custody, remand or other restrictions may require consideration for credit under the relevant rules. Different measures must not be treated as interchangeable without examining their legal status. Supply exact dates and the decisions authorising each measure. The enforcement record should be compared with the supporting documents.
Conditional release and supervision
Eligibility for conditional release or a supervised enforcement arrangement depends on statutory conditions and the individual case. Recidivism, offence classification and other factors may matter. An online calculator can provide orientation but cannot establish that every condition has been met. Official records and the relevant authority’s decisions remain essential.
Changes to the law
A proposed reform is not an enacted rule. Publication, commencement and transitional provisions must be checked before applying an amendment to a case. Reports describing a justice package may omit exclusions or date limits. No automatic amnesty or fixed release promise should be inferred from a news headline.
What to have ready
- Full case number and the authority handling the matter
- Your procedural role and current country of residence
- Original decisions and notification or service records
- A dated timeline and the evidence already available
- Known hearing dates, travel plans and your questions
Common questions
Can the sentence alone determine my release date?
No. The enforcement regime, credit and eligibility conditions need separate assessment.
Does a proposed justice package apply immediately?
No. Its enacted text and commencement must be established first.
