TURKISH NAME AND CIVIL STATUS LAW

Changing your first name in Turkey

A first name appears throughout your education, professional life and official records. If your registered Turkish name causes difficulties or differs from the name you consistently use, the first step is to distinguish a genuine name change from correcting an entry that was copied incorrectly.

What reasons can support a name change?

Article 27 of the Turkish Civil Code provides for a judicial name change based on justified reasons. The court assesses the individual circumstances. Long-standing use of another name, substantiated personal hardship or significant confusion may be relevant. Explain how the existing name affects your life, when the difficulty arose and why the requested name addresses it. A preference alone should not be presented as an automatic entitlement.

  • State your current and proposed names in full.
  • Describe where and how long the proposed name has been used.
  • Identify concrete problems and the evidence supporting them.

A court application or an administrative correction?

A substantive change to a registered name is generally considered by the competent Asliye Hukuk Mahkemesi, the Turkish civil court of first instance. A record that differs from its original supporting document may instead involve a material error that can be addressed administratively. The former time-limited administrative name-change scheme should not be assumed to remain generally available today.

Evidence and the procedural stages

An up-to-date register extract, a clear account of the reasons and suitable supporting evidence form the starting point. Witnesses should be able to describe matters they know personally. School documents, professional records and correspondence are useful only insofar as they actually support the application. A judgment, its finality, entry in the register and renewal of identity documents are separate stages.

Applying while you live abroad

Residence outside Turkey does not automatically prevent an application. Court jurisdiction, the required power of attorney and any personal attendance are assessed before filing. A Turkish judgment does not automatically update every foreign passport or civil-status record. Requirements in your other country of residence or nationality must be checked separately with the receiving authority.

Documents for an initial review

This list helps you prepare. Additional evidence depends on your specific matter.

  • Turkish identity card or passport
  • Current population register extract
  • Evidence of your established name use or difficulties
  • Names of suitable witnesses
  • Foreign documents showing a different name, if relevant

Frequently asked questions

Representation may be possible, but personal attendance or further participation can still be required by the court in your case.

Does a name change remove my existing obligations?

Is approval guaranteed?

No. The court evaluates the reasons and evidence in the individual application.
