TURKISH NAME AND CIVIL STATUS LAW

After a name-change or register-correction decision

A favourable decision may still require several practical steps before your documents are consistent. The judgment’s legal effect, its actual register entry and subsequent document applications should be followed separately.

Check finality and the scope of the decision

Identify exactly which entries the written decision changes and whether it has become final. A verbal account of the hearing is not a substitute for the full judgment and necessary endorsement. Retain an official copy with the relevant evidence of finality for later applications and for any use abroad.

Verify the register entry

Obtain an up-to-date extract after implementation and compare it with the decision. Check every name, Turkish character, birth date and affected family link. If the entry does not match, establish the discrepancy from the decision and register record before ordering new identity documents based on an incorrect implementation.

Identity documents and private records

Plan the replacement of your identity card and passport and the updates needed by banks, insurers and other institutions. Old contracts remain relevant. A decision and current extract may be required to show that differently named records concern the same person. Do not discard useful evidence of the former name before the follow-up work is complete.

Coordinate documents outside Turkey

Ask the foreign authority what recognition, name declaration or certificate format it requires. A Turkish judgment does not by itself promise immediate renewal of a foreign passport. Coordinate travel bookings and identification carefully during the transition. Where several jurisdictions are involved, keep a list of applications, required documents and the version of the name each institution currently holds.

  • Requirements of each foreign or domestic institution

Frequently asked questions
