TURKISH NAME AND CIVIL STATUS LAW

Different names in Turkish and foreign documents

A Turkish identity card and a foreign passport may display different names following naturalisation, marriage, a deed poll or another legal process. The solution depends on the cause and the document the receiving authority actually needs.

Build a document comparison

For each document, record the full name, issuing authority, date and the legal act behind it. Check whether the difference resulted from naturalisation, a name declaration, marriage, divorce, a court decision or spelling conventions. Turkish characters and machine-readable passport lines can be represented differently without necessarily creating two different legal names.

Distinguish foreign evidence from a Turkish change

A document accepted as evidence of a name change in one country does not necessarily alter the Turkish register. A UK deed poll, a German name declaration and a court judgment are different instruments. GOV.UK and the German Foreign Office describe their respective procedures, but their acceptance abroad must be considered separately. Do not assume that one document has the same effect in all countries.

Do you need identity evidence or a changed entry?

Sometimes the receiving institution wants confirmation that the differently named documents belong to one person. In other cases, a lawful name determination or a register correction is required. These objectives differ: a connection between identities does not itself change a name, while a name-change procedure can create further documentation work.

Use the receiving authority’s requirements

Provide the written request or rejection from the passport office, civil registry, bank or other authority. Identify the country of residence and every relevant nationality. This helps determine whether the next step is obtaining a particular certificate, making a foreign name declaration, updating a Turkish register or applying to a Turkish court.

Documents for an initial review

This list helps you prepare. Additional evidence depends on your specific matter.

  • Turkish identity card and foreign passport
  • Naturalisation certificate, if applicable
  • Deed poll, name declaration or court decision
  • Relevant marriage and divorce records
  • Written requirements or rejection from the receiving authority

Frequently asked questions

Is a spelling difference always a legal problem?

No. Technical transliteration should be distinguished from a substantive difference in legal names.

Will a UK deed poll automatically change my Turkish name?

No. The Turkish record and the legal effect of the document require a separate assessment.

Should I immediately file a Turkish claim?

First identify the source of the difference and the intended result; another document or procedure may be the appropriate first step.
