Turkish law provides an administrative route for certain foreign decisions concerning the existence or ending of a marriage. The conditions, the former spouses’ participation and any applicable exceptions need individual assessment. The consular guidance explains applications and states a ninety-day interval limit between separate applications in the situation it describes. That guidance should not be read as eliminating every statutory exception.
Prepare the decision and proof of finality
Obtain the complete foreign divorce decision and evidence that it is final under the law of the issuing country. Clarify the required authentication and Turkish translation. A separation document, an informal court notice or a decision that is not yet final cannot simply be assumed to have the same effect as a final divorce judgment.
When a court procedure is needed
If the administrative conditions are not satisfied, a judicial recognition process may be relevant. Recognition of the divorce is different from enforcing maintenance, financial or other obligations in the same foreign decision. Custody, payments and property issues must therefore be considered according to the particular relief sought, rather than treated as resolved by a civil-status entry.
Check the updated status and name
Once the outcome is recorded, confirm the family-status and name entries in a current extract. A future marriage may involve further requirements. The name used in a foreign passport follows the issuing country’s rules and does not necessarily change automatically with the Turkish register. Keep the decision and updated records for future document applications.

Frequently asked questions
Is a Turkish court claim always necessary?
No. First check whether the administrative registration route applies to the particular decision and circumstances.

No. Civil-status registration is distinct from recognition or enforcement of payment and other obligations.
What if the other spouse cannot participate?
The applicable conditions and any statutory exceptions must be assessed using the individual facts.
