Start by confirming the person's current location and obtaining the written decisions. A transfer may mean that the last location given by telephone is no longer current. Use official migration authority contact details.
The legal distinction
People held in removal centres have rights concerning access to a lawyer, contact with relatives and essential healthcare under the relevant rules. Detention review and a challenge to deportation are distinct. A detention challenge does not automatically result in release.
Preparing your next step
Prepare identity details, the detention decision, any deportation decision and notification records. Document medication, pregnancy, disability or children's needs. Ask for interpretation before signing documents you do not understand.

A practical file for a relative in a removal centre
Record the full passport name, date of birth, nationality, any foreigner identity number, last telephone contact and the last known centre. A person may have been transferred since the last call. Confirm location and visit arrangements through the relevant official unit; a provincial directorate number should not be mistaken for a direct centre line.
Collect both detention and deportation decisions and their notification records. A family member’s enquiry and a lawyer’s access to the case may require different documents. Add ongoing medication, treatment, family and child-related records where relevant. Release from detention does not by itself cancel deportation or an entry restriction.
